Interventional psychiatry: What is the big deal?

November 16, 2024

Mood disorders including depression are the most prevalent group of mental health conditions in the United States, affecting about 21 million adults each year. This staggering figure underscores the significant burden of these disorders, which are not just a source of emotional distress but also a leading cause of disability. Individuals with depression or other mood disorders face not only mental and physical challenges but also societal stigma and economic losses, contributing to a profound impact on their overall quality of life.
Despite advances in first-line treatments such as psychotherapy and medications, they are not universally effective. Research suggests that up to 30% of those with depression are classified as treatment-resistant, meaning they have not found sufficient relief after multiple therapeutic attempts. The residual symptoms can substantially impair social functioning, employment, and personal relationships. The loss in quality of life for these individuals is immense, with depression remaining a persistent barrier to fulfilling daily activities and achieving personal goals.
Interventional psychiatry offers hope for those who have not found relief through other methods methods. Novel treatments, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), esketmaine and IV ketamine have shown significant promise in alleviating symptoms for individuals with treatment-resistant depression, among others. These therapies are often able to produce rapid and substantial improvements in mood and function. For many, interventional approaches have been life-changing, providing relief after years of suffering and offering a renewed sense of hope. As research continues to evolve, interventional psychiatry stands as a beacon of hope, reshaping the landscape of mental health treatment and improving outcomes for those who need it most. Our team of experts at Rumi Mind Health have a tremendous amount of experience in diagnosing and treating these disorders and utilizing the most effective, appropriate modalities to address each person’s symptoms. Because we believe that depression is treatable, and everyone deserves to live depression-free.
